That comment was tongue and cheek, but yes, if you aspire to be a better swimmer, then you learn how to turn. Fast cyclists don't ride in running shoes and fast swimmers don't do open turns. That's not to say you have to start somewhere, because we all started there, but if that's where you stop What state record was that?
I also swam in high school and obviously we competed at many of the same meets. I swam for Lexington High School outside of Columbia from I was part of a free relay that went faster that what you are saying your team averaged but it may not have been a high school record you are talking about. I looked on the state high school league website and unfortunately the latest results they show are for the year after I graduated but the yd free relay champion that year was from my high school at which is about a The relay team I was on in was definitely faster than the team but I can't find our final times.
In high school I was swimming in the high 22 second range for a 50yd race and generally that placed me in the top 10 of the state but not close to the top 3. My fastest fly was a high 56 my senior year which netted me 5th in the state.
I did a HIM 2 weekends ago and swam a 32 including the run up to transition. I was 2nd ag out of the water and around 15 overall. Sprint times in pools tend to be whoever starts first finishes with the fastest time because passing is so hard.

Edited by TriGuy05 PM. TriGuy05 - PM Swam through High School and was part of a state record holding relay team , all 4 of us were swimming sec 50 yard times. This user's post has been ignored. I was in HS in the 90's Our 4x Free averaged SCM and we were 2nd all time in Canada also 2nd that year and were broke the national record in 4 x medley I split fly in 56 high and swam a 57 mid in grade 12 inSCM. I swam I'm not a fast swimmer at all, but my yd avg time in OWS is always slower than my pool times.
I may not be changing directions in the ocean, but tide and bad sighting are worst enemies for my still raw swimming skills than pushing off the walls in the pool. As for what is considered fast, I started from not being able to to a pool length to sustain a - per yd over a yard swim after a month of training.
Now I can do per yds without going all out and about per yds in OWS. It may not be fast, but seeing this improvements is keeping me focus on keep working on my swim, so hopefully one day I can swim under and be FOP exiting the water.
Look through the USMS meet results database to see times for everything from the 50 freestyle to the and other strokes.
You can sort the meet database by age, distance, year, and even short course 25 yards or meters across or long course 50 meters across. But the middle time of the top is For the to year-old women, the average swimming time for the the swimming competition version of a mile , out of the times recorded, is around These are determined using historical fastest times and an adjustment factor.
You can see the full mathematical model of how the times are calculated. Masters Swimming. But that could be the best of times or the worst of times.
You might start out as a beginning adult swimmer, just grateful to complete the distance without stopping. With improved technique and endurance, your swim times improve, along with your dissatisfaction for your previous performance. As of , the world record for the meter swim stands at just under 47 seconds, according to the Federation Internationale de Natation FINA. Before judging your performance, consider the factors that influence your time. FINA restricts competition pools to precise dimensions because the size of a pool can determine race times.
Smaller pools yield faster times because you can push off hard from the wall, and typically swim faster under water before surfacing. Swimming can be challenging and exhausting, but it also risks becoming repetitive and boring unless you give yourself a gauge to measure your progress.
Understanding the implications of a pace clock and timing your swims gives you a better perspective on your swim efforts. The meter swim gauges your fitness and provides a clear indicator of your improvement. A decent time for this distance depends on your skill, fitness and training. The world record in the meter freestyle is This number isn't necessarily "decent" -- it's for a single swim that required years of meticulous training by a professional athlete.
