All this places them at a clear disadvantage by comparison with their Spanish counterparts, who are able to operate, in the same common space, in far more favourable conditions, since they do not have to pay tax on their catch or, indeed, operational expenses such as compulsory annual vessel inspection fees, mooring charges or lighthouse fees. The Portuguese fishermen are also required to comply with minimum declaration levels for catch turnover — for taxation purposes — which are incompatible with the nature of their activity, on penalty of losing their sales and fishing permits.
This is an unsustainable state of affairs, as the minimum sum required is twelve times the national minimum wage, or approximately EUR 6 per annum, although these fishermen's average earnings do not even amount to one-half of that sum.
